Goal One

Integrate Te Reo words and greetings into my everyday classroom interactions during Practicum 1 by learning and using at least one relevant new word every day

Steps to Achieve Goal

  • Discuss with AT how te reo is integrated into the everyday language and culture of the school and observe and reflect on how this happens in practice

  • Learn at least one relevant Māori word every day and start using it on a regular basis, both at school and in my personal life

  • Make a conscious effort to integrate te reo when speaking in the classroom

Standard

Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership

Demonstrate commitment to tangata whenuatanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi partnership in Aotearoa New Zealand

  • Practise and develop the use of te reo and tikanga Māori

Modified Action Plan

Earlier in the year, my AT was doing a word of the day but this had dropped away as other things took precedence. She suggested that I start doing a word of the day each morning and add to the words on the wall section that had been started earlier in the year.

The children put their names on the board when they come in each morning in one of four sections – I feel happy, I feel OK, I feel bad, I feel bad and would like a check-in with a teacher. I shared the picture dictionary I was using with my AT, which has a pull-out chart with 40 emotions on it. We discussed expanding the feelings section using some of the words from the chart and I was going to do this in week three.
